Oat and Solutions
The global market & RAGT
Oats are one of the most popular and widely grown cereals in the world. World oat production is around 25 million tonnes. The main producers are the European Union, Russia, Canada, Brazil, Australia, the UK and the United States. They represent almost two thirds of global oat production.
The European Union is the world’s largest oat producer over 5 million tonnes.
Oats are a complex but verstaile foodstuff. Used in food and feed, oats are valued for their energy content, and richness in fibre, protein and essential nutrients such as iron, magnesium and B vitamins.
Oats are widely used in the human diet, particularly for breakfast in the form of oat flakes or granola.
They are also often used in animal feed, particularly for cattle, horses and even poultry.
More rarely, oats are used in the cosmetics and health industries for their soothing and moisturising properties.
RAGT has been investing in spring and winter oat breeding for over 20 years. The breeding station, based in France near Lille, has a multitude of breeding tools at its disposal. Through its extensive network of trials, RAGT tests the adaptability of its varieties to the different soil and climate constraints of the production zones. In addition to agronomic aspects, RAGT works on the technological qualities that are essential for integrating varieties into processing industries.
Our Common challenges
Climate change is affecting oats through more variable weather events and greater disease and pest risks. It is therefore crucial to select oats that are adapted to the climatic and environmental challenges.
RAGT for farmers: yield, stability, and also
The disease resistance of RAGT varieties makes it possible to secure the yield of the crop and therefore the farmer’s income.
RAGT works on a wide range of oats: white oats for human consumption and black oats for livestock feed and, more specifically, horse feed.
RAGT For Industries : Quality
In addition to the agronomic aspects, RAGT is working on the technological qualities that are essential for integrating varieties into the processing industry.

Did you know ?
Oats are one of the oldest cereals cultivated by man. Their precise origin is unclear, but they are thought to have originated in Central Asia or the Middle East. Archaeological evidence suggests that oats were cultivated as early as the Bronze Age.
Reasons to grow oat
- With the growing demand for healthy, natural food products, oats are increasingly sought after for their nutritional qualities. Growing oats can offer farmers an opportunity to meet this demand and take advantage of favourable market prices.
- Improved soil health: Thanks to its robust root system, oats help to improve soil structure, increase water retention capacity and reduce erosion.
- More generally, oat production can offer farmers a range of benefits, from crop diversification and the creation of new sources of income to improved soil health and reduced animal feed costs.
